Are Cuban Cigars Really That Good?

First let me clarify that when I mention Cuban cigars I’m only considering the premium brands…not machine made cigars or lower end Cuban cigars (yes there is such a thing!).  I think it’s safe to say that in general, when we’re talking about premium Cubans, Cuban cigars are that good.  Anyone who has enjoyed a Cohiba, Monte Cristo or Trinidad will tell you that they really are among the best smokes they have had.  However, that doesn’t mean that there are not some excellent non-Cuban’s out there.

You need to keep in mind that the owners of many Cuban cigar companies actually left Cuba during the revolution.  While Castro was busy nationalizing their cigar companies, they were busy restarting their businesses elsewhere in countries like the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Honduras.

While you can’t recreate climate and soil conditions, you can certainly find places that come close.  Which is exactly what they did.  A great example of this is Padrón which grows their tobacco in Nicaragua and whose owners are of Cuban descent.

Cuban cigars are excellent, but it doesn’t mean that nothing else is as good.  So while I would definitely recommend having some Cubans in your humidor, don’t fret if you can’t get your hands on them because you’ve got plenty of good options out there.

  1. I think you’ve said it all. I’ve smoked non-cuban cigars and although I can see why they are touted as great cigars there is nothing like an aged Cuban.
